Mentoring Experience for Undergraduate Students

The video is my instruction on organizing metadata during pre-trip orientation.

1/  Mentoring Field Work

The University of Arizona      2022-2023

  • Instruct students on collecting and documenting data for ancient artifacts.

    • Project: Frogbear workshop in Kyoto

    • We documented plaques at Kyoto Buddhist temples for data collection purposes. I have coordinated with one undergraduate student and trained her to collect digital data and compile metadata.

  • Train students on collecting geospatial data for subsequent research applications.

    • Project: Field work in Academia Sinica, Taiwan

    • We collected aerial photos at their WWII achieve for Hangzhou and Taiwan. I mentored an undergraduate volunteer on how to use GIS software to draw study area and edit maps digitally.

2/ Mentoring Data Collection and Visualization

The University of Arizona     2019-2022

  • Instruct students in converting historical materials into database.

        Project: Regional Religious Systems (rrs.arizona.edu)

  • Mentored 2 undergraduate students in my department to gather historical data from classical Chinese sources. They organized large data in the Gazetteer of Hangzhou and debugged previously made maps.

  • The result of data gathering by 2 undergraduate students is presented in "Shifting Imperial Walls" of the Storymap of Hangzhou Buddhism, created by the RRS project team. (See storymap on the right; in the below for mobile users

3/ Mentoring Career Developments

Fo Guang University      2016-2018

  • Cultivate students for employment within the Fo Guang network.

    • Collaborated with the department and Fo Guang Shan (a Taiwanese Buddhist organization) to integrate non-academic career paths, training students in English for roles such as temple guides, scriptural studies, and international volunteering. Numerous students successfully secured employment within the Fo Guang Shan system.

  • Lingshan Monastery career speech

    • Delivered a career-focused speech at Lingshan Monastery’s life exploration camp, guiding undergraduate participants in identifying their professional interests and encouraging English proficiency to enhance competitiveness in the Taiwanese job market.

Nanhua University     2016

  • Foster the academic, social, and professional acclimatization of international exchange students in Taiwan.

    • I volunteered to teach a class of Brazilian exchange students who were once soccer players. I guided them in acclimating to Taiwanese culture and education, with most securing local employment in fields like hotel management and tour guiding post-graduation.

4/ Mentoring Academic Collaboration and Services

The University of Arizona     2022-2023

  • Guided undergraduates in data collection and spatial analysis, presenting findings at the following academic conferences.

    • 64th American Association of Chinese Studies at University of Denver

    • 30th Pacific Neighborhood Consortium at the University of Arizona

    • Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies at the University of Arizona (online)

    • 29th Pacific Neighborhood Consortium (PNC) at Academic Sinica, Taiwan

  • Collaborate with student volunteers for the PNC conference.

    • Trained students in hosting scholars, setting up venues, and proofreading handouts, providing early exposure to academic environments for interested students.

Fo Guang University   2016-2019

  • Guide student-assisted research at the Center for Buddhist Studies.

    • I coordinated undergraduate students to use digital archive tools for documenting new-found historical materials. Their collaborative effort in annotation and punctuations paved the foundation for multiple book-length and article publications.

  • Train volunteers for Buddhist Studies Graduate Students’ Conference.
